BankingStatements, reconciliation and closing the month

Match every line, then close the month.

Bring in the statement as your bank’s CSV or PDF. Match each line to the invoice, bill or entry it belongs to, with the compass at the top showing where the account stands. When every line is matched and the difference is zero, close the period, and nothing in it changes until someone reopens it with a reason.

An example company and example figures. Three lines are matched, the compass agrees, and September is closed.

One month, from the statement to closed.

Emirates NBD sends the September statement as a scanned PDF. Here’s how it becomes a closed period, one step at a time.

1

Bring the statement in.

Upload your bank’s CSV export or its PDF statement. A PDF made by software is read from its text; a scanned one is read in your browser, in English or Arabic, column headings included. Then every running balance is checked against the line before it, and you’re told what was found.

  • The statement has to add up, opening plus lines to the closing balance, or it doesn’t come in.
  • Lines already on the account are left out. Each new line looks for a posted entry for the same amount within five days, and matches it.
2

Rules book the routine lines, when you ask.

A rule says what a line looks like and where it goes: anything with “maintenance fee” in it, money out, goes to bank charges. Choose Apply rules to unmatched lines, and each line a rule fits is booked and matched. Nothing is booked at import, and lines in a closed period are left alone.

  • The same rules fill in the account, partner and label when you categorise a line by hand.
3

The right invoice, suggested under the line.

Open a line and Tamra lists what it could be: open invoices or bills for the exact amount, the customer’s other documents when the line names them, and posted entries for the same amount within seven days. Apply to invoice records the payment and matches the line in one step.

  • Not a document? Reconcile with an account, such as bank charges, and the entry is posted for you.
4

It closes when the difference is zero.

Close Period sets the bank side against the books side, worked out by Tamra, not typed in. It closes only when every line in the period is matched, the difference is zero and the statement adds up. For a genuine exception, Close anyway asks for a note saying why.

  • A line matched for only part of its amount still counts as open, for what’s left on it.
5

Closed means closed.

Lines in a closed period can’t be added, edited, matched, unmatched or deleted, by anyone, from any screen.

  • To change something, reopen the period with a reason. Reconciliation history keeps who closed it, who reopened it and why.

Every bank and cash account, at a glance.

Each card shows the book and statement balances, what’s left to clear and when the last statement came in. Reconcile from the card, or import the next statement.

  • Accounts in other currencies, with lines in their own currency and entries at the day’s rate.
  • Transfers between your accounts, posted and matched from either side.
  • Cash on hand keeps its ledger, with no statement to reconcile.

What it posts, and when.

Three bank lines, three balanced entries. Codes and names are from the chart a new UAE company starts with; 1123 Emirates NBD - AED is the ledger account Tamra opened under Bank Accounts when the bank was added.

  1. INV-0046A cheque applied to its invoice

    Payment from the bank line

    29 Sep 2026, cheque deposit 000731

    Balanced4,725.004,725.00

INV-0046 is paid, and the line reads Matched to INV-0046.

  2. JE-0131A bank charge, booked by a rule

    Line categorised

The rule chose 6970. By hand, you pick the account under the line, in Reconcile with.

  3. JE-0117The first statement’s opening gap

The statement opened at 22,403.40 and the ledger said 21,153.40. One adjustment brings the books to the bank.

Also in Banking.

Typed or pasted

No file? Type the lines in, or paste them from a spreadsheet or a PDF, with the closing balance checked as you go.

Claims paid back

Match a payment out to an approved expense claim, and the employee’s balance is cleared.

Money before the invoice

Record a customer’s deposit as an advance from the line. Tamra raises the advance invoice with VAT and matches it.

The next month, waiting

Entries dated after the statement wait under Next period, so September’s figures stay September’s.

The wrong way round

When an invoice matches a line recorded as money out, Tamra says so and flips it in one click.

Who can reconcile

Importing, matching and closing need a role that can reconcile. The database checks it, not only the screen.

See your own statement reconciled on Tamra.

Bring last month’s bank statement, as a PDF or a CSV, to the demo. We’ll read it in, match it and close the month together.
